GULP works to engage all residents of the Upper Russian River Watershed to collaborate in strengthening our capacity to insure local sources of food, water, energy and the basic physical and spiritual needs of our communities by co-creating vibrant, self-reliant local economies.
This is our mission statement adopted by our Steering Committee after substantial input from our general membership.
About Ukiah
Ukiah is a semi-rural area located 110 miles north of San Francisco. The population within the city limits is approximately 15,000 with another 8,000 in the surrounding areas. Our group encompasses everything from Hopland in the south to Potter Vally in the north, an area about 30 miles long. The economic activity in the area is largely driven by the service sector. As the county seat and population center for Mendocino County we are a regional draw for things like shopping, medical facilities, legal services, educational services, and cultural amenities. Other major sectors of the economy include wine grape production, marijuana cultivation, and some small scale agriculture (mainly beef and pear production). There is a moderate amount of tourism as we are on the Highway 101 corridor connecting the Bay Area with Northern Costal communities, although a highway bypass means many of those passing through do just that.
