Free and Open Source Software is a way for relocalized communities to use, modify and create software without paying license fees. Organizations and people using computers today are mostly using proprietary software which they have paid to license with the purchase of their computer or separately. There is an alternative to the licensing of proprietary software. It is called Free and Open Source Software or FOSS.
FOSS gives organizations and individuals the ability to run their computers using an operating system and software applications for which they do not have to pay a license fee. Open Source software can be modified and given back to the Open Source community for use by others.
Free and Open Source software is powerful because anyone can use it, anyone can modify it and anyone can contribute improvements back to the Open Source community. FOSS saves money on licensing costs and encourages people to become active in the development of software which they find useful.
