Somos Uno - What Can I Do to help from here?

This is a first post, so it's an introduction as well.

I'm a South Philly gal, born & raised...spent as much time in Santa Cruz, and several years in Ballina, Curracloe, County Wexford (across the water, the local newspaper calls it.) Dublin is one of my favourite places.

Currently - until we return to Europe - I reside outside a small Georgia town called Luthersville - where the flag (both) and the ten commandments stand proudly on lawns and in front of buildings (no disrespect intended whatsoever).

Also, I travel around the planet as a Coordinator for the World's Regions as a volunteer for a spiritual (not religious) non-profit called Humanity's Team - basically saying, 'We are all One - let's practice.' Practicing is often more difficult than one imagines. But so is relocalization.

Getting folks up from their couches after a day of working at least one job, some kids, caring for elders, in major commutes that don't move for hours, etc., etc., etc.

I teach Spanish, with tutoring available in Russian & Italian (I speak Madarin well enough now - after a while studying - to wow any teenager in a Chinese restaurant here!). My hubby and I also have a eBay used vinyl record store online, where we sell all manner of music (you like it, we either have it or can find it.) That keeps us in survival mode when teaching isn't happening.

And a Geek is what I am. If it's free, I just might be able to find it on the net. Love building amateur websites, have more than several Blogs, and am a Research Journalist out of Germany. One of the folks who researchs for fun....yep.

So, let me know how I can help. I noticed there are several members 25 miles or less away from me. Only problem is that none have their email listed...bummer.

May your day be chock-full of Blessings & Belly Laughs - and Opportunites in Abundance to pass them forward.

Namaste.

Philadelphia Organic Democracy

Learning to Live With Less Fossil Fuels

Convergence 11 - Sustainable Living Festival
'Learning to Live With Less Fossil Fuels'

April 19th to 23rd 2006

‘Learning To Live With Less Fossil Fuels’ is the title of the eleventh Convergence festival that takes place from the 19th to the 23rd of April. Following on from the success of four festivals last year Cultivate hosts this five-day event as part of their programme for 2006.

The event will open on Wednesday the 19th with a lecture entitled ‘Responding To Climate Change and Peak Oil’ by British economist Dr. David Fleming. Fleming is an independent writer in the fields of energy, environment, economics, society and culture and has recently published “Energy and the Common Purpose. The book describes a 21st century rationing system which he calls Tradable Energy Quotas or TEQs, which take the concept of rationing and bring it up to date combining modern technology and the need for drastic cuts in energy consumption.

Post Carbon Dublin (Ireland)

'Oil, Climate and Food' A lecture by Michael Meacher

Start: 2005-10-12 20:00

End: 2005-10-12 22:00

The Right Honourable Michael Meacher is a British politician and a member of Parliament for Oldham. He was first elected to Parliament in 1970, and served as a minister under Harold Wilson and James Callaghan. During opposition he was in the Shadow Cabinet for fourteen years. He was seen as a figure on the left and an ally of Tony Benn and stood as the left's candidate against Roy Hattersley in the 1983 leadership election. He was a junior minister at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. He was sacked in June 2003, and since then has attacked the government on a number of issues, notably the 2003 Iraq war and genetically modified food. In this lecture he will touch on the emerging oil crisis, the dangers of genetic modification in our food and taking up the challange of climate change.

Post Carbon Dublin (Ireland)

Free 'Peak Oil' presentation made available online

PowerSwitch have made available for free an online presentation by Dr. Colin Campbell about the phenomenon known as ‘Peak Oil’.

By combining slides with the audio file from Campbell’s speech at the Peak Oil UK conference in Edinburgh in April 2005, PowerSwitch have created a Flashmedia file that presents very clearly the causes and consequences of ‘Peak Oil’. It starts by looking at exactly how oil is formed then looks at the reality of oil discovery and oil depletion in action before moving on to the devastating consequences. It is an all-encompassing talk.

The presentation lasts 45 minutes. James Howard of PowerSwitch said, “ I remember seeing the presentation in Edinburgh and it was excellent. I had to make it available to more people so they can learn more themselves and then help educate other people about the stark nature of what we are facing.

Post Carbon Dublin (Ireland)

'Fuelling the Future - the challenge and opportunity of Peak Oil' was a two day conference held in Kinsale over the weekend of June 18th-19th 2005. The conference addressed not only the issue of peak oil but also a range of solutions to it, from natural building and local food production to renewable energy and local economics. The weekend was a huge success and has done much to promote discussion around the issue of peak oil in Ireland.

Speakers included Richard Heinberg, Colin Campbell, David Holmgren and Richard Douthwaite. Fuelling the Future has just released a 2-disc DVD set of the conference featuring all the main speakers. Beautifully packaged and professionally edited, this is an excellent record of the event, and an inspirational tool for anyone with an interest in peak oil and creative strategies for adapting to it. The cost of the DVD set is €15 plus p&p. To order copies (credit card payment can be taken) please contact Fergal Mohan at mailto:fergal@mohandigital.com

Post Carbon Dublin (Ireland)

Energy prices and Ireland's Future

Wednesday October 12
A FEASTA Conference www.feasta.org

How will the Irish economy and society change if the energy prices continue to rise as a result of the growing shortage of gas and oil? Will economic growth continue at its present pace? Will so many families be able to holiday abroad and run a car? Will the property bubble burst? This conference presents the results of a nine-month-long study into the ways

Ireland might change over the next 25 years undertaken by Feasta under contract to the Environmental Protection Agency. Representatives of the key components of Irish economic life will present their views."

Post Carbon Dublin (Ireland)
