Here is a Swedish study on energy embedded in different foods. Majority of it would be more or less applicable here. It concludes that you can reduce the amount of fossil fuel energy you eat by a factor of 3, by eating foods that are produced and processed more efficiently. Local production is one factor, but transportation costs are not the most significant thing. Importing food from Central Europe, which is about like bringing food here from Fresno, adds about 10% to energy use. But ship transport increases energy use by about 150%, and air transport by about 2,000%. About one third of the fossil fuel energy we eat is in drinks and sweets.
