Your ideas please!

Hi there,

Thanks for visiting this site. I'll refer you to the front page's statement of intent if you want more info, but really that's just to get things started. What I'd like to know is what you would like to see on this site. Please put your reply below. Also, if you find something good to check out somewhere else on another Relocalize site (or anywhere else) put a link in here as well.

thanks

Charles

relocalization vs post carbon

It seems to me the core of this site re the title, should be on all phases
of relocalization. When I found this site I was amazed that "my" topic/focus
was actually a major effort by so many people.
However, in a casual preview I see this "post carbon" concept all over the place. I hope as I read more of the info, and I will, I will find that it really is about community relocalization.

The question is, How can we,the locals, take control of our own futures by gaing control of all major systems that are needed for our basic survival?

So, more stuff on answering the above question.

The problem I've found is

The problem I've found is that with the growing number of groups, it can be hard to find the right one. We have a map (with some overlapping dots) and a long list of groups that have no particular standard.

I think a good answer to this would be to add another field to the list, location, which states Country, Area, City *in that order* and sort the entire list in that order. That way a newcommer to this site will easily find if there is a group near where they are, or 5 so close together on the map as to be indistinguishable.

Thank you.

Finding Groups

Hi Nick,

Thanks for posting your comment. We are in the process of changing the listings of groups on the website so they are easier to seach and navigate. We recognize that the groups listings are definitely not ideal at the moment. The website is currently set up using the Drupal system, which is what allows for content to be added and edited by multiple users; however, it is also more difficult to customize features.

We are also looking to move towards Google maps for searching geographical locations for groups. At the moment, one of our Local Group Coordinators, Jim Zack, of Sustainable Saratoga Springs, has been graciously volunteering his services in producing the maps. As groups get more concentrated, he will try to find larger map images to allow for a magnified view.

We will keep you posted as new features are added and existing ones improved.

Thanks for your patience!

cheers,
shelby

How to Add a Group

Sorry if I am just plain blind... but I just cannot seem to find the place where you 'add your group'... I've gone to groups, and it lists all the groups, and that you can join a group, but it doesn't (or I can't find) provide an easy to view, or find (for me) link to how to upload your group, or what procedure is required for uploading a new group...

Please let me know at PeakOil_RSA AT telkomsa.net. Thanks allot.

How to Join the Relocalization Network

Hi Lara,
Thanks for posting your question.

We have received and continue to receive many requests from groups interested in joining the Network, and we felt it was important for potential new groups to have clear information about the Relocalization Network and about what to expect when they join the Network.

In order to improve this process, we have recently developed an application procedure for groups interested in joining the Relocalization Network. The application process involves reading though the Introductory Package and completing the application form.

The Application Form has been designed to help groups if they are recently formed to start thinking about what their goals are and to help them get a better understanding of their community and its needs.

As a previously established group, it is also useful for us to know a little about your group and your region so that we can best provide support and find points of collaboration. We’d also like to learn a little bit about the skills and experiences that your group can share with other groups in the Relocalization Network.

You can download both the introductory package and the application form here:

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

best,
shelby

Signing up for a group is the following three step process

Hi Lara,

This is what I could find - I'll also send this to the address you mention.

Let me know if it helps.

Charles

Signing up for a group is a three step process:

1. Create a user account.
2. Log into the website with your username and password.
3. Sign up for your group.

1) Create a user account

In the right hand column of any webpage on relocalize.net there is an
area for you to enter your login name and password. Directly below the
"Log in" button there is a link "Create a New Account" that will take
you to the registration page.

Required information is highlighted and marked with an asterisk (please
note that your street address and phone number will not be displayed to
the public). The "introduction" field is not required but a short
description will allow other members to learn a bit about you. You may
want to join a Local Group from the drop down menu of Local Post Carbon
Groups.

Once all your information has been entered click "create a new account"
and your new password will be email to the email address that you
provided in the form.

2) Log-in

In the yellow sidebar on any page of relocalize.net there is an area for
entering your login name and password. Your password will have been
emailed to you when you register. Your browser will prompt you for the
option to remember your password. Click the "Log in" button to log into
the site.

3) Join a Local Post Carbon Group on-line?

Most Local Groups have their membership setting set to "open." This
means that if you are logged into the website, you can click on the
green "Join this Local Group now" button that is in the yellow sidebar
under the name of the Local Group on the group homepage. In your case
the button would be on this page:
http://www.relocalize.net/groups/northernrivers . Clicking on this link
will automatically make you a member of the Post Carbon Northern Rivers.

Once you are a member of a Local Post Carbon Group, you can participate
in the Group Forum Discussions and post your blog post in the Community
Blog.

Hi Charles,

Thanks heaps for that compliment!! Would love to hear how you go, swap ideas etc.
Theres a lot of talk about reloc on the aussieslivingsimply.com.au site (if you haven't already discovered it) and might also be an avenue of catching up with likeminded pple in your area.
