Statement of Intent

Oil production peaked in 2005, and climate change is accelerating. These two challenges are insurmountable if we continue to live in a "business as usual" fashion. In order to secure a bright future for our children and to assure continuation of civil society in the face of these challenges, we must build real community and we must "relocalize." We must learn to make, repair, grow and sell our goods close to home. Soon, we will not be able to afford to ship our vegetables from South America and our tools and clothes from Asia. Soon, we will either make, grow and fix things in our community, or simply do without them. That is what the Wimberley Self-Suffiiciency Project is about; creating a network of sustainability minded individuals who are dedicated to making Wimberley as self-sufficient as possible.

Join us. We need your vision, your skills, your passion and your wisdom. Together, we will create a sustainable future for Wimberley and the surrounding area.

Immediate needs and goals include the following:

- Raising community awareness via print media and the web (see http://www.greenguru.org for an example of this)

- Community Education focused on permaculture, alternative fuels, conservation and green building (see http://www.relocalize.net/node/4689 for an example)

- Transportation Co-Op development (anyone up for creating a simple interface on the web that would allow ride-sharing match-ups?)

- A well-maintained directory of sustainability consultants and businesses (rainwater collection, permaculture, solar and wind power, seed saving, etc.)

- A Bio-Diesel Co-Op (Volunteers?)

- Annual film festival (in progress, slated for the first weekend in April at the Wimberley Community Center)

- A media library consisting of books, DVD's and other media focused on sustainability and relocalization, to be maintained at a central location (alternatively, a website allowing us to list the media we own individually, facilitating sharing these items)

- A monthly, informal meeting to facilitate networking and community

- Your ideas go here!

Please join us. There are no obligations, other than sharing the common goal of furthering sustainability for our community, and our children.
