Michael Shuman, author of Going Local: Creating Self-Reliant Communities in a Global Age, says Americans today purchase 58% of goods and services from local businesses and that rising oil prices could easily make 80% localization cost-competitive. He numerates the
key tasks consumers and households can undertake to make a community-enriching transition from peak oil possible, as well as explain how social, environmental and ethical values can be reintegrated into capitalist economics.
