Dream Farm

Dream Farm is Mae Wan Ho's term for small homesteads based on an emerging technology in the 3rd world focused around efficiencies in managment of the nitrogen cycle which allow even small wood, wind and water deficient farms to be energy self sufficient, with improvements in sanitation and food productivity. You can find her articles on the Institute for Science in Society website. Look for Dream Farm or Sustainable Agriculture.

We have the opportunity of a use of a small patch of agricultural land near the edge of Eugene to develop a model farm.

Post Carbon Eugene, Oregon

From Rob Bolman: Why Not A Carbon Tax in Eugene??

From Rob Bolman:

Hi[City Planner]Keli[Osborne],[City Councilor]Bonny[Bettman] & [City Sustainability Manager] Felicity[Fahy],

If other cities can take bold steps to tackle big problems, then what is wrong with Eugene?
Please forward this to the Sustainability Commission.

Rob
robtb@efn.org

**********

Portland Unveils Carbon Tax Plan
By Dylan Rivera, The Oregonian, Nov 8, 2007.

"In a bold move to curb the growth of greenhouse gas emissions from the Portland area, city officials plan to charge builders hundreds of dollars for each new home that is not extremely energy efficient. And it would require, as part of every existing home sale, that an energy efficiency report be done by home inspectors. Believed to be the first of its kind in the nation, the carbon fee and inspection requirement would levy taxes upon builders who merely comply with the energy efficiency requirements of the Oregon building code, already one of the most stringent in the nation. It would then pay cash rewards to developers who make buildings that save at least 45 percent more energy than the code requires. The plan will go before Portland residents, in hearings, in
January. With passage, the carbon-fee rules would be in place by 2010... Mayor Tom Potter... said he supports it. The news was immediately big in Chicago but not yet announced in Portland, where it is designed to significantly influence development. 'This is obviously an ambitious and potentially controversial undertaking, but with the new urgency and call to action on issues around global warming, this is the type of policy that Portland needs to be a leader,' [said City Commissioner Dan Saltzman who announced the plan for Portland in Chicago on Tuesday
night at the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo]. The plan also helps maintain the city's reputation nationally as a hotbed of green living and stokes a friendly competition with Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco and Austin, Texas -- cities that regularly seek to out-green each other."

Post Carbon Eugene, Oregon

Action Needed TODAY! vote for Year-round Farmers Market today, May 31, 2008 by 10:00 PM PDT

Action needed today: vote to win $10,000 seed money for Year-round Farmers Market for Lane County
We are currently BEHIND by approximately 60 votes.

http://www.ideablob.com/ideas/2281-Year-Round-Home-for-the-Lane-Co

We are up against massive internet networking so we need you to share this with your friends who are supportive of our efforts.

If you voted anytime before May 22, 2008 you will need to vote again now.

http://www.ideablob.com/ideas/2281-Year-Round-Home-for-the-Lane-Co

From my friend Holly:

TODAY, May 31, is the last day to make a bold step toward supporting local farms and ensuring food security in Lane County! Local activist Erin Ely has submitted the idea of starting a year-round farmer's market in Eugene to www.ideablob.com. The winning idea gets $10,000.

We have LOST our lead and our now in SECOND place. We are down by approximately 60 votes to an idea where this one rock-star dude basically gets to pocket the money for himself!

It takes only three minutes to register and vote and it is very easy to get off their list after the voting is done. I did not get any spam as result of signing up either--only invitations to vote for the next month's ideas.

Thanks for considering!"

All 8 ideas are listed on the home page under the "May Showdown" on the right hand side of the page.

This is the link directly to our contest idea:
http://www.ideablob.com/ideas/2281-Year-Round-Home-for-the-Lane-Co

Please log on to www.ideablob.com and vote today for this idea on the home page:
