Professor Maxwell Irvine currently chairs the Royal Society of Edinburgh's Inquiry into Energy Issues for Scotland. Prof Irvine said of his investigation: "We will be looking at the science - that is social sciences, economics, environmental and technical". He is also quoted as saying: "We'll want to talk to the Finns about their decision to build a new nuclear plant. We'll try to benefit from knowledge abroad, as well as at home."
He advises the UK Committee on Radioactive Waste management and is a member of the Energy Steering Group of the European Academies' Science Advisory Committee advising the European Parliament and Commission. Prof Irvine was Vice Chancellor of Birmingham University (1996-2001) and chairman of the Joint Information Services Committee (1998-2003).
