POWER TO THE PEOPLE:
Implementing a Non-nuclear Future
Speaker: Keith Barnham, Professor of Physics,
Imperial College, London
Thursday 26th October 6.30 pm, admission free
Professor Barnham will be covering the following pertinent subjects: the problems of nuclear power, the links between civil and military nuclear activities, the potential of renewables to provide carbon-free power to the people. His lecture will also examine recent developments in the UK Energy Review, Trident Replacement and events in Iran and North Korea.
Professor Barnham will also talk about his innovative work on photovoltaic technology: “Intelligent Blinds” which generate electricity from direct sunlight while also allowing diffuse light to illuminate the building. This will be followed by a Question and Answer session with the audience.
Before the lecture there will be a showing of an amusing 15-minute film called “Anthropology 101” where a group of scientists from a distant planet in the far future investigate Earth civilisation.
Keith Barnham is Emeritus Professor of Physics at Imperial College London. His early research career was in Experimental Particle Physics at Birmingham University, CERN Geneva and Berkeley in California before taking up a lectureship at Imperial College in 1972 in High Energy Physics. He joined Scientists Against Nuclear Arms (SANA) in the early 1980s and with colleagues published the first detailed calculations of plutonium production in civil reactors, which confirmed the links between the civil and military nuclear programmes in the UK.
After a distinguished career he took early retirement to continue his groundbreaking work on the quantum well solar cell that has twice the efficiency of current solar cell technology. One application of this technology will be “Intelligent Blinds” which illuminate and generate electricity simultaneously.
