At our last meeting, someone outlined a very interesting idea which seems to have generated some excitement in the group. I'd like to run it by you all to see if anyone's tried this before, and if you have any suggestions on how to implement it.
The idea is to host an interactive map on our website, showing the local region in high detail. We then collect data from the community and show it visually on the map, eg:
Once some of the map has been marked, people in the community moving towards sustainability can identify each other. This could facilitate the creation of 'green clusters' and business networks which could make progress more effectively than they could alone.
The map & data could also be used as the basis for an Energy Descent Action Plan.
There are some technical hurdles to jump before we can implement such a scheme. While I have some web development skills, I don't have any GIS experience and the learning curve may be steep. There seems to be a lot of open source GIS systems out there but it will take a lot of time and work to research to find the most suitable one and to learn how to use it.
Google Maps is not usable in our area due to the low-resolution coverage. Our local council (Caloundra City) already hosts an impressive online map with excellent resolution and numerous useful layers. Perhaps we can leverage this in some way.
Any ideas out there on a way to take this forwards?

good idea!
Barry, I think this is an excellent idea, though a very labour intensive one. You might want to contact Jim Zack and see if he has any ideas for you, he does all of the interactive maps for relocalize.net. Keep us posted!

this is a great idea
Yes I agree this is a great idea.
Another option is setting something up using http://www.frappr.com/
I haven't checked how practical it is, but I've seen it used on other sites, such as http://www.cuteoverload.com/

frappr.com
Hey all,
We actually experimented with using Frappr maps for the Relocalization Network groups initially, but there were some usability issues. One aspect of Frappr maps is that anyone can add themselves to the map, which is good in certain cases, but not quite suitable for the Network, which requires groups to run through an application process to make sure they're intentions are in line with those of the Relocalization Network (ie. no violence or discrimination, etc.). The other aspect of Frappr was that visually it wasn't very customizable and the map itself couldn't be integrated into an existing webpage (just a small linked image). However, it may have improved sinced and it's a free service so it may be worth experimenting with.
cheers,

Mapping directory of resources and services for your group
Hi
We are working on developing a geographically aware directory for each group. You could add services, places, people by interests to the directory, then we will be able to show these entries on a google map, and do proximity searches (like you want to find all the people in your area interested in playing music, or map the locations of your group events)
Stay tuned for further details, I think we should be able to have this working in the next couple months.
Any other feedback or ideas are most welcome.
