Bristol Friends of The Earth

Description:

Bristol Friends of the Earth have been helping people to run environmental campaigns since 1971. We are part of a network of more than 200 local groups across the country. We campaign on local and national environmental issues that affect Bristol and the surrounding area, drawing together people from all walks of life to protect our environment and improve our quality of life.
By joining Bristol Friends of the Earth you can play a key role in transforming our local environment and you can also campaign on important global issues such as climate change. We are always in need of campaigners.

Our current local campaigns are as follows:

Bristol Airport Expansion
We are campaigning to prevent the planned expansion of Bristol International Airport, which already causes as much carbon dioxide to be released as all the cars in Bristol put together, and which is planned to double in the next few years.

Tackling Climate Change

GM Food
The GM campaign was (re)launched in April 2003, as part of a national Friends of the Earth day of action, and timed to coincide with the run-up to the Council election.

South-West Regional development Plans
Regional planners want to massively increase the population in Bristol: by about 40% by 2026. This growth would require massive house building on the Greenbelt around the city, equivalent to five new Bradley Stokes. The Bristol and Bath Friends of the Earth groups are supporting South Gloucestershire Friends of the Earth in their campaign to save the Greenbelt.

How to get involved:

There are a number of different ways in which you can get involved with the local group. You might be able to help out with admin, or you may prefer to get involved with some local campaigning. However much time you can spare - even it it’s only a couple of hours a month - it’s all valuable. We can offer training and support, so no previous experience is necessary. If you would like to discuss how best you can help, please email us.

Whatever your walk of life or past experience of environmental work, we can find ways of helping you put your skills to good use. As an active member, you might find yourself doing any of the following:

• Organising campaigns
• Taking part in a National Friends of Earth Day of Action
• Holding stalls
• Working on our website
• Researching issues to support campaigns
• Media work for radio, TV and newspapers
