Hi everyone

Hi everyone,

Do any of you feel like introducing yourselves?

I'll go first.

Right now I'm in a Master's university program in Media Studies. After I have my Master's I plan to complete a Phd and then work as a professor (if universities are still functioning!).

I've been part of the local Post-Carbon group from the beginning, but I hadn't been much of an environmentalist before around mid-April of this year when I became very concerned about peak oil. Aside from Post-Carbon London, the closest thing to an environmentalist project that I've been part of is local "critical mass" bike rallies. I find that I'm becoming increasingly concerned about environmental issues though. Before becoming aware of peak oil I was a little 'green,' but I wasn't deeply concerned about environmental problems. Like a lot of people, I was somewhat concerned about the environment but mostly apathetic. Since becoming a lot more concerned -- as well as informed -- I'm still very optimistic about the prospects for turning our crazy society around.

For a couple of years I've been part of community groups that deal with non-environmental issues. One of those groups, which I've been involved in for awhile, is an alternative media project. I'll spare you from my radical politics though -- for now.

Toban

Post Carbon London (Ontario)

Urban Agriculture

The City Farming Project is a London organization that is involved in urban food production, using an innovative cooperative urban farming approach. Here is information from Melissa Parrott:

There is a great collaboration in London called the City Farming Project,
which I was involved with last planting season, and which will start up
again in the Spring.

We have a plot of land on Wharncliffe Rd, just past the "Golden Mile" of
car dealerships (yuck), which has been kindly set aside for us to plant
organic vegetables. City Farming Project also uses small garden plots in
peoples backyards throughout the city, to contribute to food production.

One great thing about it is, we get fed from the garden every week for $15
a basket of food (an overflowing basket of scrumptuos heritage
vegetables).

The other great thing about it is we gain experience and knowledge about
plants, sowing, harvesting, seed broadcasting, plant identification and
all steps involved to grow good healthy, organic, LOCAL food. And it
certainly doesn't cost you anything but time to volunteer and learn first
hand what it takes to produce food.

The land that the City Farming Project garden is located on is part of a
private farm. The farmer has generously donated a portion of the farm
which was overrun with thistles and wild lettuce. After a huge clear-out
in the spring and plowing and planting, we managed to get a very decent
crop to feed about 15 families in London. Next year will be even better.

So, it's not really a community garden, although it is tended by the
community - we don't rent plots of it individually like other gardens. The
farm is not affiliated with the London Community Resource Centre (that I
know of).

There are also various residential yards participating in food production.
My neighbour provided the potato patch. That being said, I'm sure there
are many 'farms' or garden plots unlisted.

One important aspect of the City Farming Project is to increase awareness
about the importance of agricultural land around and in cities, small
scale gardening and the dangers and flaws in current development practices
(aka sprawl and big bix stores).

If others are interested in the City Farming Project, e-mail Rose at:
rosemarywhite@sympatico.ca

Post Carbon London (Ontario)

Permaculture

A discussion of permaculture in London and Southern Ontario. Please contribute your information, links and resources to this thread.

Ideally I'd like to arrange a permaculture presentation or Q & A session with a local permaculture designer, who is familiar with plant guilds and permaculture techniques suited to the bioregion. I'll post excerpts of previous discussions here as well.

Post Carbon London (Ontario)

Open Thread – Global Warming

An open thread for members of the Post-Carbon London group that wish to discuss the broad impacts of global warming, and their implications for London and the world. This thread is intended to continue the informative and free-wheeling debate between 'consensus' and 'contrarian' views of climate change and its role with regards to peak oil. Posters in this somewhat contentious discussion are encouraged to "Think Global, Act Local – and Play Nice!"

Post Carbon London (Ontario)

Garedning small scale and farming

I'm proposing this new list so we can offer suggestions on farming and local production of foods. How to grow your own. Helpfull web links. Location of local farmers selling on the side of the road. How to garden in small places. Soil upkeep. Seed keeping and exchange. Drying techniques. Virtually anything about personal and local food production. Exchanging ideas.

Post Carbon London (Ontario)

100 Things You Can Do to Get Ready for Peak Oil - Discussion

Check out the great season-by-season checklist of preparations by Sharon Astyk at http://www.energybulletin.net/23645.html. The whole list forms a gestalt that is very well worth considering in detail, but here are a few snippets selected at random:

Spring:

3. Order enough seeds for three years of gardening. If by next spring, we are all unable to get replacement seed, will you have produced everything you need? What if you can't grow for a year because of some crisis?

15. Now that warmer weather is here, start walking for more of your daily Needs. Even a four or five mile walk is quite reasonable for most healthy people.

18. tore the components of some traditional spring holiday foods, so that in hard times your family can maintain its traditions and celebrations.

Summer:

1. If you don't can or dehydrate, now is the time to learn. In most climates, you can waterbath can or dehydrate with a minimum of purchased materials, and produce is abundant and cheap. If you don't garden, check out your local farmstand for day-old produce or your farmer's market at the end of the day - they are likely to have large quantities they are anxious to get rid of. Wild fruits are also in abundance, or will be.

10. Don’t go on vacation. Spend your energy and money making your home a paradise instead. Throw a barbecue, a party or an open house, and invite the neighbors in. Get to know them.

12. Practice living, cooking and camping outside, so that you will be comfortable doing so if necessary. Everyone in the family can Learn basic outdoors person skills.

Fall:

1. Simple, cheap insulating strategies (window quilts and blankets, draft stoppers, etc...) are easily made from cheap or free materials -goodwill, for example, often has jeans, tshirts and shrunken wool sweaters, of quality too poor to sell, that can be used for quilting material and batting. They are available where I am for a nominal price, and I've heard of getting them free.

15. Most cold climate housing has or could have a "cold room/area" - a space that is kept cool enough during the fall and winter to dispense with the necessity of a refrigerator, but that doesn't freeze. If you have separate fridge and freezer, consider disconnecting your fridge during the cooler weather to save utility costs and conserve energy. You can build a cool room by building in a closet with a window, and insulating it with styrofoam panels.

16. While I wouldn't expect deer or turkey hunting to be a major food source in coming times (I would expect large game to be driven back to near-extinction pretty quickly), it is worth having those skills, and also the skills necessary to catch the less commonly caught small game, like rabbits, squirrel, etc...

Winter:

1. Your local adult education program almost certainly has something useful to teach you - woodworking, crocheting, music training, horseback riding, CPR, herbalism, vegetarian cookery... take advantage of people who want to teach their skills.

4. Now is the time to prepare for illness - keep a stock of remedies, including useful antibiotics (although know what you are doing, don't just buy them and take them), vitamin C supplements (I like elderberry syrup), painkillers, herbs, and tools for handling even serious illness by yourself. In the event of a truly severe epidemic of flu or other illness, avoiding illness and treating sick family members at home whenever possible may be safer than taking them to over-worked and over-crowded hospitals (or, it may not - but planning for the former won't prevent you from using the hospital if you need it).

8. Get together with neighbors and check in on your area's elderly and disabled people. Make a plan that ensures they will be checked on during bad weather, power outages, etc... Offer help with stocking up for winter, or maintaining equipment. And watch for signs that they are struggling economically.

9. Work on raising money and getting help with local poverty-abatement Programs. After the holidays, people struggle. They get hungry and cold. Remember, besides the fact that it is the right thing to do, the life you save may be your own.

URL: http://www.energybulletin.net/23645.html

Sharon's list reminds me of something I have noticed before: When times get hard it is it is the small-scale, gentle and practical skills - almost always traditionally women's skills - that hold communities, neighbourhoods, and cities together.

Pleaase add your own recommendations and share specific suggestions that you think relate to our local constraints and opportunities here in London.

Post Carbon London (Ontario)

Preparing London Ontario for Natural Gas Depletion... by 2010

Here is a discussion starter that I posted to the Post-Carbon London mailing list, which generated numerous responses and suggestions. I'll clip and repost some of the best responses from the mailing list, and see if we can add more here, with a focus on rapid adaptation at the household and community level. Original post:

----- Reposted from http://lists.riseup.net/www/info/postcarbon-lo -----

Hm... I just ran across the scariest picture I've seen all year: North American Natural Gas Production Curves, projected over the next few years, with a massive production collapse projected between now and 2010.

Check it out at: http://europe.theoildrum.com/story/2006/11/27/61031/618.

It raises the following very interesting dilemma:

“Simply put, by 2010 Conventional Gas production can be half of what is today in North America, falling from 20 Tcf/a to 10 Tcf/a. Jean doesn't hesitate to say that shortages will soon occur in this part of the world. Production already peaked in 2001, declining 5% up to 2005, so a downward trend is already there, but will that cliff unfold? Unconventional Gas production has been rising too slowly to avoid the peak, can it avoid the cliff?”

Now I realize that this is not news to many of you, (See: http://www.highnoon.ws/) but the immediacy of the production collapse was news to me!

Since moving to London, I've been struck with how unusually dependent we are on natural gas in Southern Ontario: I'll bet over 95% of homes here are gas heated, and the few that are not use electric heat, with at least some of the juice generated in gas-fired plants. I have not seen a single oil furnace since moving here, and the place we bought our wood stove from said 98% of their stove and fireplace installs are gas, not wood or pellet.

North American natural gas production cuts of 50% within three years (if the stats are roughly accurate) don’t mean ‘expensive gas’, they may mean ‘no gas’, depending on how the politics of NAFTA and competing regional distribution demands play out. I wonder whether 50% cuts would even allow the current pipeline distribution system to stay filled and pressurized.

The post and comments at The Oil Drum is pretty technical, but is a good starting point for discussion. Some questions to ponder:

   1. Are the facts incorrect, or am I mis-interpreting them? Do we really have only 1000 days 'til the heat goes out in much of Ontario?
2. Can the natural gas distribution system continue to function under this level of deloading?
3. If this projection is accurate, why isn't everyone involved in gas distribution and emergency planning freaking out big time?
4. What mitigations are possible for London as a whole? Coal-derived ‘town gas’? Electric conversion and generation? Super-insulation?
5. What mitigations are possible at the neighbourhood and home level? How can you prepare your home or apartment building for gas delivery disruptions that could last several weeks?

I don't have any answers to these, but hope that you do... and that we can start discussing it now!

Dion Knows about Peak Oil

http://canada.theoildrum.com/story/2006/12/3/121020/783

Stephan Dion knows about Peak Oil. Why is he not talking about it?

Here is why :
Report from theoildrum, posted by Pascal Gagnon, of Roberval, Lac St Jean region, Dec 2006.

He came this summer in our city and the journalist told him about me and my report about peak oil. He told the journalist (and then me thereafter) that he read the following books : Twilight, Beyond Oil, The Party is over and many other reports.

I personaly sent him a copy of the french report I made and he told me it was one of the few french document available in Canada at this time.

So I think he will steer the party and the politics toward the talking of this problem, which is yet to be done here in Canada, especialy in Quebec.

Documentaries to screen

Are there any documentaries that Post-Carbon London should screen? The Post-Carbon organizers could use suggestions. Some of us want to set up screenings, but we're not sure what films to show.

It should be easy enough for us to set up screenings with the library, and the local chapter of the Council of Canadians will probably help us to organize the screening events.

We plan to screen The Power of Community soon and we'll screen Escape From Suburbia when it becomes available. We're also going to try to screen Manufactured Landscapes soon (trailer here). Otherwise, there are no plans at this point.

A Crude Awakening isn't available. Maybe Peak Oil: Imposed by Nature would be worth ordering and screening (here's a clip or a trailer).

A lecture-style piece called Climate Change, Despair and Empowerment has been suggested.

Someone else has suggested that Seeds of Change be screened -- possibly with help from another local green group. This film doesn't seem appropriate to me though.

Another possibility is The Oil Factor. This film would bring out the politics of oil, which people need to become aware of; yet, there are important considerations associated with raising oil politics (like interfering with attempts to create the perception that ecology somehow transcends politics).

Koyaanisqatsi is probably appropriate (clips here), but I haven't seen it for awhile. I worry that this one might present naive ideas.

As I understand it, Darwin's Nightmare presents a problem -- "invader species" -- that could be addressed through relocalization. In other words, I think this one might implicitly promote relocalization somewhat.

Another possibility, which I know nothing about, is Out of Balance.

Post Carbon London (Ontario)

Feeding London, what's required

I've done some rough calcuations, open to anyone to verify or alter, on what it would take, land wise, to feed London if all food for the entire population was to come locally.

London's population is 460,000 and growing according to http://www.sjhc.london.on.ca/corp/restruct/lhsrr/comm.htm by 11.8% per year.

It takes 2 acres of land to feed one person (including unfarmable land of about 25%, which may be too low). That's using modern chemical fertilizers and pesticides and mechinery.

That requires 920,000 acres of land. Or 1,437.50 sqr miles. London's size is 166 sqr miles, thus an area of 8.7 times will be required. (adding the internal free farmable space in London is small). That's an area 12 miles in radius including the city itself.

But this does not include the people living in these surrounding areas. That adds an additional 659,329 people, more than doubling the required farm land. Add to that farm animals required that must be fed, of 200,000 (which is really low) and we would need 2,638,658.00 acres to feed this area, or a radius of 20 miles. That means we would need a circle from Strathroy in the west, to the lake on the south, to Ingersol on the east, to almost Stratford to the north (Kirkton). And that area would need to grow by 11.8 percent a year. Thus in 10 years we would need an area of 8,048,090.04 (3 times as much) for a radius of 35 miles. Since there is no more south would have to be made up with the rest. Thus Paris in the east, Goderich in the north, and almost Sarnia in the west.

This does not include increased land required due to lost crops. If we remove fertilizers and chemicals and mechanized machinery with a power down, the require land per person will skyrocket. It will only require a 25% crop loss to pests to dramatically increase the amount of land required per person. And that does not include storage loss (much of it will need to be kept from freezing) and transportation loss.

I'm open to reinterpretation of these rough numbers. And I'm not making any judgements on whether this is doable or not.

Richard
Web forum standards

The steering committee has agreed on Post-Carbon London's tentative mission and values, as well as a policy for this web forum.

All members of this web forum are expected to respect Post-Carbon London's mission and values when posting here (in previous forum threads, and elsewhere). (The "values" statement about respectful and civil behaviour is expanded upon in web forum policy document). The web forum policy outlines how a web forum moderator will respond to forum members who violate Post-Carbon London's mission and values.

The 7 steering committee members have devised the current draft of the mission, value, and policy statements based on:
- Principles of the Relocalization Network and the Post-Carbon Institute
- Feedback from the Post-Carbon London Nov. 4 roundtable event
- Comments received after our first draft was posted

Current web forum members who are looking for more open discussions will have to go elsewhere. (You might try The Oil Drum: Canada.)

The steering committee welcomes feedback on the new mission, values, and policies (with the exception of feedback from Richard W., Brishen, and "gmellis1@hotmail.com", who have all made it clear how opposed they are to what Post-Carbon London stands for).

If there are major changes to the mission and value statements, or to the web forum policy, an announcement will be posted in this web forum.

Richard W., Brishen, and "gmellis1@hotmail.com":
You are welcome to continue posting here provided that you respect the Post-Carbon London mission and values. If you show such respect but make what seem to be innocent violations of the mission and value statements, then you will be given warnings like any other web forum user (before we remove you from the group -- if you repeatedly violate the mission and value statement). However, if you (once again) show disrespect for what Post-Carbon London stands for (by, for instance, once again opposing our underlying goals), you will be removed from this web forum group immediately. Statements to the effect that Post-Carbon London's mission and values are unrealistic, or that the future will inevitably turn out different, will be interpreted as a violation of our mission, values, and policies.

Post Carbon London (Ontario)

Natural Gas - Household 'De-Gassing' Plans

Taking existing homes off of natural gas, or modifying them to be livable for extended periods without gas, is an interesting -- and urgent -- challenge for Londoners concerned about impending natural gas depletion. Post your scenarios for conversion of existing homes to this thread, for discussion and sharing of techniques.

See ‘A Tale of Two Houses’, below, for the first post in this thread, which discusses two quite different adaptation strategies.

Post Carbon London (Ontario)

Converting Lawn to Veggie Garden

I've got a whack of lawn to convert to garden in the spring, and need some advice on how to best accomplish this rapidly...

I'll be able to use permaculture sheet mulch for a small part of the conversion -- maybe 200 sq. ft. -- but that will still leave about 600 sq. ft. to do in some other way.

I'm considering renting a roto-tiller to till up and turn over the top 2" or so, to destroy the turf, and then leave it sit for a week or two to die off, then single dig and/or till again to create a row garden for the first year's crop. This is more or less the approach recommended by Steve Solomon in "Gardening When It Counts: Growing Food in Hard Times".
( See: http://www.amazon.com/Gardening-When-Counts-Growing-Mother/dp/086571553X )

Any thoughts on how to approach a lawn conversion and get a crop off in the same year?

Post Carbon London (Ontario)

About the "coffee" get-together

Do any of you who were at the "coffee" get-together on Monday night (January 29th) have any comments about the event?

What did you think about what we ended up focusing on in the discussion?
I'd say that we focused on information-sharing. There was also a little talk about project organizing, and a some getting to know one another.
Were you pleased with how the discussion went, or would you prefer different priorities?

Were you happy with how the discussion was arranged in a big circle most of the time, or would you prefer a different approach?

Do you have any comments on how we listened to the audio recording together?
(Would you like there to be an audio recording next time? Should the recording be a similar length?)

What did you think of the venue?
(If we meet there again we'll ask them to turn off the music)

Post Carbon London (Ontario)

Already existing projects

Hi everyone,

I'm starting this thread so that people can share information about active projects that relate to the goals and concerns of Post-Carbon London. (For instance, information will be posted here -- possibly by me -- about efforts that members of the local Council of Canadians chapter are making to address transit issues.)

Please focus on initiatives that are either local (like the transit campaign that the local Council of Canadians group is beginning to put together) or that can easily be brought to the local community (as with the Council of Canadians national energy campaign, which easily could be brought to London through the local Council of Canadians group).

Sharing this information will help people around here to co-ordinate their own efforts with these already existing projects (rather than unnecessarily duplicating others' efforts and wasting effort on working to start unnecessary new projects, which can be difficult to get off the ground).

Post Carbon London (Ontario)

New local projects?

Would anyone like to write about new local projects that they would like to contribute to?
I've started this forum thread so that people can post about interests and concerns that they would like to try to address through local actions.

People have contacted me to express interest in helping with various projects -- including public education and government lobbying. I'm trying to bring these people together through e-mail, and a few of these people had some contact with one another at the get-together on Monday night. This forum thread is meant to be one way to bring people together so we can get some constructive initiatives going.

The sooner that action-oriented folks get to know one another and agree on what to do together about fossil fuel -related problems, the sooner we can start to bring about more constructive change.

It's not yet clear how new projects related to the goals of Post-Carbon London might be linked to this organization, but we all can sort those issues out as we go. For now I can only tell you that if you want your efforts to be part of "Post-Carbon London", you will have to stay in contact with the steering committee members and respect our input. If you would rather not work with us, you can always work with a different already existing project (a different organization, perhaps), or you can operate more independently. And if you don't know what approach would be best, people (including me) can help you to figure that out.

If you want to e-mail me about any of what I've written about above, you can reach me at tblack2 at uwo . ca.

Post Carbon London (Ontario)

Gasoline Supply in Ontario - A tightly coupled system under stress.

I've been thinking lately about the current mini-crisis in gasoline supply here in Ontario – How a few accidents, and slightly unusual circumstances have tightened supply, and how the psychological dynamics of shortage have, I believe, caused people to 'buy up' more extra gas than is missing from the system, causing an amplification of the problem, with selective station closings and some rationing at the pumps.

The problem arises because our Just in Time gasoline delivery system is so tightly coupled that a minor shock cascades through the system for weeks.

It is kind of a tempest in a tea cup version of the problems that may impact the global system over the next year or two, if the Saudi decline just breaking now on TOD is confirmed. See: http://www.theoildrum.com/node/2325#more

The big picture is a bit out of our scope here in London, but the local mini-crisis is a local impact we could discuss.

Please post your thoughts below...

Post Carbon London (Ontario)

Conserving our way to bankruptcy

I was quite saddened but not surprised to hear the reason why Toronto Hydro has requested a rate increase. I heard this on CBC radio news and just had to check into it further. Sure enough I heard it correctly. When I visited Toronto Hydro's website they state it in black & white. The following is copied directly off their press release:

"The increase is to recover costs for lost revenue and utility incentives due to very successful conservation programs in 2005 and 2006" http://www.torontohydro.com

So because people have done well at conserving they will have to pay more.
While I applaud Toronto Hydro's honesty I am not surprised by this news. It is the reason why I think the grid is in serious trouble in the event of peak oil. When poor economic times descend upon us and there is less demand for electricity and more people are unable to pay their bills then the price that the remaining people have to pay must go up. This is a positive reinforcing feedback loop that can lead to a much weaker grid. When we take this to it's logical conclusion, it means that we will be unable to support the massive infrastructure and vast complex systems that this centralized grid requires.

I still believe that it is very important to try to conserve electricity but it is scary to see how the important systems our complex society requires are so interconnected and vulnerable.

These nasty financial feedback loops will start to show up more and more. The Toronto Star (Sat Mar31,2007-SecF7) has a story about a man in Guelph who invested $160K to build a windmill only to see his municipal taxes reassessed upwards thereby removing the financial benefit he hoped for. Again, when economic troubles begin, those that can afford to pay municipal property taxes will have to pay more to make up for revenue the city loses from those who cannot/will not pay.

Our systems seem to be built for only a positive growth situation. Zero growth or pray-tell negative growth introduces these nasty economic feedback loops that will bring things down. Including the lights. Those storms last summer in Ontario that left thousand without power for weeks shows how vulnerable we are. How long would they take to get power restored if we were in serious economic trouble instead of the boom times were riding on the "Peak".

I'm starting to see some serious storm clouds on the horizon.

Post Carbon London (Ontario)

Steering committee e-mail problem

Hi everyone,

If you or anyone you know has tried to e-mail the Post-Carbon London steering committee through this web page http://postcarbonlondon.ca/index.php?option=com_contact&task=view&contac...
(or by e-mailing mail at postcarbonlondon dot ca)
your message wouldn't have gone through.

We hope that we haven't missed any e-mails, but we're not sure whether anyone tried to send e-mails there.

If you have sent a message through that page (or to that address), we hope that you will re-send the message, and we are sorry for the trouble.

What municipalities have passed Peak Energy Resolutions?

The mayor of my municipality would like to see examples of Peak Energy resolutions as I continue to campaign and lobby for recognition of this issue. I am particularly interested in the resolutions of Canadian municipalities. I know about SF, Portland, Bakersfield already. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

thank you in advance!

Post Carbon London (Ontario)

Volunteers needed for Dec. 8 climate change demonstration

Volunteers needed for
December 8th International Demonstration on Climate Change in London

Date: Saturday, December 8, 2007
Time: 12:00pm - 2:00pm
Location: To be announced very soon.
Street: To be announced very soon.

Please email coclondon dot powershift at gmail dot com to discuss how you can help

---

The Climate Chaos Coalition is working with the Global Climate Campaign
to publicise and promote plans for demonstrations on climate change, to
coincide with the United Nations Climate Talks(COP13/MOP3) in Bali,
Indonesia, December 3rd to 14th 2007.

Synchronised demonstrations are being planned around the world for
Saturday December 8th 2007 - in as many places as possible - to call on
world leaders to take urgent action on climate change.

The 'Call to Action' for these demonstrations and related events that
will take place on December 8th 2007 is as follows :

"We demand that world leaders take the urgent and resolute action that
is needed to prevent the catastrophic destabilisation of global climate,
so that the entire world can move as rapidly as possible to a stronger
emissions reductions treaty which is both equitable and effective in
preventing dangerous climate change.

We also demand that the long-industrialised countries that have emitted
most greenhouse gases up to now take most of the responsibility for the
adaptive measures that have to be taken, especially by low-emitting
countries with limited economic resources."

---

There is a Facebook event page for this demonstration here:
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=7069982523

---

This event will be organized by the London chapter of the Council of
Canadians:
http://londoncoc.blogspot.com/

Chatham-Kent Oil Age Planning Group (CKOAP Group)
