In what's believed to be a world first, 16 of Australia's leading faith communities released a document on global warming. Entitled 'Common Belief', it's a collection of theological and spiritual statements on the climate change debate. ABC Radio National spoke to representatives of a number of the involved faith communities.

reducing consumption
I'm pleased to see the faith communities advocating a reduction in consumption and not just looking for alternatives to help keep the status quo. "The Evangelical Alliance quoted the Australian Business Round Table which suggests deep cuts to our emissions are needed, in the order that would reduce our rate of economic growth by about 2% per annum, and they say we should be prepared to accept this." That sounds like adoption of the Oil Depletion Protocol to me!

A Treaty of the Atmospheric Commons
Andi -
Given that the Oil Depletion Protocol has no structure to allocate national GHG emissions rights equitably under a steadily declining annual global GHG emissions-budget,
it seems to me that what is needed is the climate policy framework of Contraction & Convergence,
as was purpose-designed in 1990 by Global Commons Institute and as has been widely promoted since then. [See: www.gci.org.uk ]
I greatly look forward to some bright spark managing to integrate the Protocol within the Contraction & Convergence framework.
Regards,
Lewis
