As you may already know, 2007 is a pivotal year for the direction of US agriculture and food policies because of this year’s farm bill. Through my affiliation w/ Slow Food USA (www.slowfoodusa.org), individuals and organizations have the opportunity to join other concerned citizens to show their support for a special report entitled “Seeking Balance in US Farm and Food Policy” that will be sent to Congress. This document seeks to change the course of how our food is grown, what food is grown, encourage local food production, offer more access to healthier foods, and support new and existing small-scale farmers. For more information and learn of ways individuals can take action, go to http://www.slowfoodusa.org/farmbill/index.html. An insightful article by Michael Pollen in the NY Times regarding the politics of the farm bill can be found at http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/22/magazine/22wwlnlede.t.html?ex=1335067200&en=56d0833dcf38897c&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink. In addition, organizations have the unique opportunity to join more than 400 groups who since January have endorsed the “Seeking Balance” report. This broad, growing alliance is calling for a new direction in farm and food policy - one that takes the patchwork of existing programs that serve too few and instead creates a system that advances the interests of all Americans. View endorsements (Updated 5/2/07 at 3:05 p.m.) Contact us to endorse the report. I am sharing this email with the staff at Equal Exchange, my family, and my friends with the invitation to join me in learning more and perhaps taking some sort of action. This appeal comes from a concern for family farmers and the future of our food system that I believe we all share. Thanks for your consideration! Brian www.equalexchange.coop.
