Cape Breton - a community of communities

Hi. I am writing this before the showing of The End of Suburbia at Bethel Hall in Sydney (on 16 September 2005), a few days before the event takes place - just to make sure that there is a place for you to put your comments.

What did you think of the DVD?

How do you feel?

Frances

I feel self righteous

And the DVD made me a bit apprehensive about even owning a car. Hate oil yet cant live without it yet. It spurned me on to find this website, sign up and chat with those who feel the same way and wish to overcome their oil based lives. Glad to hear you are having a public showing, we havent gotten around to that yet here. What is happening with the tar ponds? Reid

Public showings of "The end of Suburbia"

Hi Red, Unfortunately, only 3 people, who hadn't seen the DVD before, came to see it. We had hoped for more people - but three is better than none. I have arranged to show the DVD in several libraries in the area in the next few weeks. The tar ponds are still there, but things are moving along - slowly. (For more info go to the Sierra Club website) Frances PS I get the impression that people don't want to hear bad news, but that's only natural.

Meetup

We got 15 people together last Friday for a viewing, through the Oil Awareness groups at Meetup.com. I've found that to be a good site for attracting new people, you might want to give it a try. There may already be a group in your area that you don't know about.

re Meetup Meeting

Hi John, Is your Meetup Group in Halifax? 15 is a good number of people to come out. I wonder what they thought of the movie and if they will continue to want to meet together? I think you have monthly meetings. I don't think there is a Meetup group in Sydney.

CBC interview of Barry Silverthorn on January 18 2006

Wendy Berkfeldt interviewed Barry Silverthorn, producer of the DVD "The End of Suburbia" on Mainstreet (CBC Radio) on 18 January. A good crowd came out to see the DVD - maybe 10 to 15! Thank you CBC, (and the McConnel Library, for letting Wendy know about this important movie.) Several people said they would like to keep in touch. There is so much to talk about. Hope you will start blogging and getting to know each other. Only by co-operating and supporting each other will we be able to plan ahead for this difficult time.
