Plant & Seed Swap 2008

We have decided to swap seeds and plants separately. To participate in the seed swap, please post what you have to share and what you hope to find in the Seed Swap Inventory database on the Yahoo group site: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sustainable_se_wisconsin/database. Members can then contact one another individually to arrange swaps.

We will continue discussing how to swap plants later in the spring. If you have ideas, please share them on the Yahoo listserv. Thanks!

reply to Megan

The artichoke needed to be brought in over winter, to produce next year. However, I forgot it when we had hard frost and I presume it's a goner.

I have lots of strawberries to share in spring. Would love rosemary and castor bean.

I will be ordering my seeds/plants soon, so if you have other things that I was looking for, please let me know ASAP. (Yes, we can share the milkthistle.)

salsify and scorzonera

Hi,
I found your posting today and would like to trade with you, scorzonera is what I was looking for, as long as they are new seeds because I understand that they are short lived; some of your tomatoes and some other things.
What I have from your want list: walking onions, rosemary and in a while lemon verbena.
I have many other things that are not on your list, but maybe you would be interested in, I'm mainly into italian veggies (since I am from Italy), medicinal plants, fragrance, edible flowers, small fruits, I also have a good selection of tomatoes and peppers and weird stuff, the more unusual the better.
Since I'm brand new I'm not sure how this exchange works, but drop me a note, if this is O.K., n_elegance@yahoo.com and let's talk.

your list

Shivani, how did the artichokes work out for you? Intriguing!

I have castor beans for you and several other things on your list. They're not new, but the bigger seeds should be quite hardy over a few years. Have some rosemary plants growing inside- you're welcome to have a piece now or whenever we meet.

When/if you locate milk thistle, would love to share some. Same with strawberry. Would be nice if we could get both from plant so would produce this year!

Anyone have cold-hard bamboo?

Bamboo is a great plant to include in any permaculture design. They can be very pricey to buy from a nursery, though. I'd love to get some "babies" if anyone here is growing cold-hardy bamboo.
The most cold-hardy bamboo is Phyllostachys nuda, which is evergreen, and hardy to -22. The shoots are just a tad bitter so must be boiled before eating. The canes are not of the highest quality, but are useful for making many things.

heirloom tomatoes

we have been selectively choosing the largest tomatoes seed for next years planting for 12 years of the Amish Paste tomatoes type and are for the most part getting a pretty good sized paste tomatoe. Yum! If anyone wants some seed please send $2.50CDN and SASE and we will be happy to send some seed. This is a pure strain as we don't plant any other tomatoes and don't live near enough to anyone else who does. They are great just to eat but we grow them for salsa. John Dixon

heirloom tomatoes

I have quite a few heirloom tomatoes, including some unidentified ones, from an heirloom seed mix I got several years ago. I'll list a few that come to mind now, and more later after I look at my seeds and notes.
My taste favorites are Evergreen (which stays green), Gold Nugget "cherry" tomato and another golden "cherry" whose name does not come to mind just now. Pineapple is yummy, too. (I like sweeter, less acid tomatoes.)
Gold Nugget was the first variety to yield tomatoes this year, and kept right on producing till past killing frost. Even after the vines died, the little tomatoes kept on ripening.
I save seed, and am on the quest for the best tasting varieties. I plant 12-15 kinds each year.
Yellow tomatoes are much more nutritious than those of other colors, so I am leaning toward that color in new varieties that I try.

worm castings

If anyone has ideas about how these could best be packaged (and what quantity would be equivalent in value to a seedling??) please let me know.

megan's picture

wonderful worm castings!

For packaging, how about you bring them in a bucket with a scoop and people who want them bring their own container? That or plastic grocery bags without holes should work fine.

As for equivalency, I think I would trust you to work it out with me/others when we meet. Also, I would be happy to pay you for extra castings if I don't have enough seeds you want.

Thanks!
