A veritable who's who from Bundaberg's environmental sector attended SustainaBundy's movie night on Wednesday the 30th of January to watch The Story of Stuff, about the extraction, production, distribution, consumption and disposal of all the stuff that makes up our daily lives, and There's No Such Thing As Away: Managing Waste, a video interview with James Stanfield of Bundaberg Waste Management by SustainaBundy's Andi Hazelwood.

Mrs. Hazelwood and Mr. Stanfield were on hand to engage the crowd of 40 in an enthusiastic discussion on reducing consumption and waste. Members of the audience included Division 10 candidate for Bundaberg Regional Council Deirdre Fagan-Pagliano, staff from the Burnett Mary Regional Group for Natural Resource Management and the Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Water, members of the Hinkler-Burnett Greens, the Bundaberg Organic Gardeners, Landcare, the Mad Cycologists Bicycle Users Group, Bundy Freecycle, the Bundaberg Community Garden Committee and youth aid organisation the Oaktree Foundation. Mrs. Hazelwood said the night was a resounding success. "The movies are real eye openers and people had nothing but good things to say about them - and about SustainaBundy. We signed up some new financial members, added people to our email discussion list, and had lots of folks asking what we were going to do next!"

As it happens the SustainaBundy calendar is full to the brim. The 2008 SustainaBundy Directory and Guide: how to live a GREENER life in & around Bundaberg is scheduled for release immediately following the council amalgamations in March. Because of the overwhelming response to the movie nights, SustainaBundy will be holding an all day movie festival on Saturday the 29th of March in the School of Arts building. Throughout the course day they'll be showing a variety of films about sustainability, including "End of Suburbia," "An Inconvenient Truth," "The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil," "A Convenient Truth: Urban Solutions from Curitiba, Brazil" and many others. And in the next few weeks the group will hold another SustainaBundy Garage Sale Party, to promote "buying second hand first" as a way to reduce consumption.
