This list of potential SustainaBundy sub-groups gives an idea of just some of the numerous projects and initiatives we'd like to see undertaken in the Bundaberg region. This list will grow and change as the community provides input. To be a part of any of these initiatives contact us.
1. Community Education Group: Educating the community about not only peak oil and climate change, but also about the inspiring and successful responses already in place throughout the world that can be initiated here in Bundy. Potential partners: council, library, TAFE, BMRG, local experts, retirees. Many of these projects are already underway.
- SustainaBundy Directory and Guide: annual publication connecting and promoting local environmentally responsible enterprises and providing practical how-to articles on various aspects of sustainability
- Community talks: give presentations about SustainaBundy at meetings of local community groups, organisations and business associations
- SustainaBundy movie series: regular screenings of "The Power of Community" and other practical response videos with time allotted for brainstorming, ideas exchange and signups to develop SustainaBundy membership
- SustainaBundy Library project: establish a collection of resources on peak oil, climate change, self sufficiency, relocalisation, and related subjects in the local library. Includes books, DVDs, power meters and other useful resources
- Oral history project: learning from Bundaberg's aged community what the town was like before, what it manufactured and grew, and what from that can be rekindled
- Re-skilling workshops: get local experts and elderly people to teach practical skills like preserving, cooking, organic gardening, bicycle repair, etc.
- Sustainability education in schools (gardening, energy, waste, etc)
2. Food & Gardens Group: Addressing food security, health/nutrition and food miles while promoting local businesses and boosting tourism. Potential partners: cafes, restaurants, grocery stores, growers, Bundaberg Region Tourism, local gardening groups, volunteer service organisations.
- "got local?" food program: promote and highlight locally grown food in eateries (special all-local meals) and in grocery stores (clearly labeled local products) - reduce food miles while telling locals and tourists that Bundaberg products really are special!
- Green waste program: use waste greens, coffee grounds, teabags and eggshells from all local eateries, produce shops, hair from salons, etc. to produce biogas and compost (see 3a below)
- Urban community food garden: centrally located site to allow those without their own garden space to grow food. Site can be used for how-to workshops, meetings, get togethers and school programs. Kids from neighbourhood schools can help maintain site while learning about food production.
- Community supported agriculture (CSA): community members buy "shares" in a local farm enterprise and get a weekly box or bag of produce in return (not just for produce, CSA can also be used for "herdshare": eggs, chicken meat, milk, beef, goat meat, etc)
3. Energy Group: Addressing local energy security and greenhouse gas emissions. Potential partners: council, local retailers/suppliers, BMRG.
- Anaerobic biogas digester: process weeds from Landcare projects and waste from green waste program (2b, above) into biogas and compost onsite at community food garden
- Community renewable technologies bulk-buy program for solar hot water heaters, solar panels for electricity, wind turbines, etc.
- Public works energy security program: renewable power sources for hospital, police, fire
4. Transport Group: Addressing greenhouse gas emissions, traffic, health and affordability issues. Potential partners: bicycle shops, fitness shops, car dealerships, volunteer service organisations.
- Community supported transport program: local participants with vans/large vehicles volunteer at intervals to drive community members where they need to go
- Biking and walking initiatives: promoting "human powered transport"
- Vehicle share: reduces pollution and traffic, saves money
5. Local Economy Group: strengthening the local economy and educating about sustainable trading. Potential partners: local banks, financial advisers, business people.
- "got local?" products program: Promote locally made products over cheap imports to boost local business and tourism while reducing transport emissions and oil dependency
- Local currency, "The Bundy Bob": keeps money in the local economy, encourages more local trade, reduces food and trade miles, encourages tourists to use local businesses, reduces financial vulnerability to external shocks
- LETS/Time Banking: LETS (Local Energy Transfer System or Local Exchange Trading System) and Time Banking are predicated on the idea of trading time or services instead of cash
6. "Extenders" Group: Reducing waste and promoting creative ways to extend the life of products.
- Freecycle: don't throw it away, give it away. SustainaBundy will work closely with the existing Freecycle group to promote this method of waste reduction
- SustainaBundy garage sale parties: buy second-hand before buying new, promote relocalisation, have fun!
