MnSCN member Dr. Albert A. Bartlett, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Physics at the University of Colorado, Boulder has come out with a DVD and book on exponential arithmetic, energy, population and sustainability.
The 74-minute DVD is of Bartlett's popular lecture "Arithmetic, Population and Energy: Sustainability 101." The 302-page paperback reprints Bartlett's papers over the past 30 years, and includes articles on crude oil depletion by L. David Roper and "Exponential Growth As A Transient Phenomenon In Human History" (1976) by M. King Hubbert. Chapters 6 and 7 give many activities that can be used in middle-school math classrooms to help students gain a fundamental understanding of the arithmetic of steady growth.
See the table of contents at the website and purchase a copy of the book/DVD: http://scimath.unl.edu/exp/exp.html.
Watch or listen to Dr. Albert Bartlett's presentation, "Arithmetic, Population and Energy," on Global Public Media.

The essential exponential - you cant deny the arithmetic
Dr Albert has a very gentle sense of humour in his presentation. Its not flashy and gee whiz, its more a case of think about the inescapable conclusion. I have watched it about four times as have many of my peakster friends. Its that sort of dvd. I find it entertaining even if not hugely into maths.
He was out here in Adelaide South Australia a few years ago and he gave that lecture. The count on the number of deliveries of this same lecture is now well above 1500, so I guess he knows it pretty well.
Its just sad that all those who champion growth havn't seen it. The growth addicts are cheering for a truly great disaster and the Albert Bartlett logic shows that date is close, not in the far off distant future.
Cheers
