We've taken the best from the US - the Relocalisation Network - and the best from the UK - the Transition Network - to ensure we have the best possible chance of making a successful transition to a post carbon future.
Transition Town Eudlo
Small town – big plans
Transition Sunshine Coast congratulates Eudlo in becoming an official Transition Town and beginning the transition from oil dependency to local resilience.
The community based, volunteer run Sunshine Coast Energy Action Centre (www.seac.net.au) led the way nationally last year when they were instrumental in the Sunshine Coast Region being recognised as Australia’s first Transition Initiative and the first initiative outside the UK.
The Transition Movement is taking off around the world with communities queuing to sign up to actively begin working on positive solutions to both climate change and peak oil.
In Australia there are now Transition Initiatives in Armidale, Geelong, Bellingen, Newcastle, Hervey Bay and Sydney with more than 70 more Australian groups on the waiting list. Internationally there are almost 100 official initiatives and more than 600 communities ready to go.
Transition Sunshine Coast co-ordinator Janet Millington says the movement is being embraced internationally because it offers personal empowerment and clear action strategies for communities.
“With the magnitude of global issues such as climate change and oil depletion it’s difficult to know what to do. Transition Initiatives address that with practical and proven ways to relocalise communities and bring people together,” Ms Millington said.
“We are our greatest resource. If people can take action and responsibility for these issues, not only will they make a difference in their own lives, but significant people and community power can bring real changes at government and policy level. When you join the Transition Network you are joining thousands of others working on the same issues.”
Sonya Wallace from Transition Town Eudlo said the real work is only just beginning.
“Becoming an official initiative is a great step forward. We’ve already been working together for a year through the Relocalisation Network on things such as creating local food supplies, Permablitzes (working bees in member’s gardens), starting a co-operative, bulk buying, sharing skills and knowledge and generally helping each other prepare for a future of climate and energy supply uncertainty,” she said.
“We look forward to now bringing this all together even further and adding the banner of Transition Town Eudlo.”
