We are living at the cusp of a most historic moment in human history.
The more than forty videos listed below represent a growing body of work that is dedicated to informing, educating, and inspiring you about several interlinked, potentially crucial but related global issues that are already increasingly intruding into our daily lives. These issues have the potential to radically alter life as we know it and have come to expect it to be.
The question of how or whether humanity will cope with these changes remains to be seen. The outcome will clearly depend on how soon there will be concerted action by a large majority of actors in the developed world. You are an essential ingredient for the solution and your action, or lack of action, will be felt. Any one of these videos could convince to you to begin to act, or to at least to question your sense of complacency. We invite you to watch a few of your choice.

Coming Soon: A Crude Awakening: Featuring Matt Savinar
Basil Gelpke and Ray McCormack (90 minutes) 2006
The BBC Film Network calls it, "Another Inconvenient Truth."
A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash offeres those new to peak oil an informative and engaging introduction to the topic. At the same time, the movie remains pertinent to, and well-accepted by, those informed on the topic. A blend of interviews and relevant cinematic clips provided the information content of the movie, with cartoon and 1950s-style American public information video interjections creating entertaining quips, easing its heavy message. The Oil Drum
Salon.com says: "Boy, are we in trouble. This film paints a vastly grimmer picture than that, and here's the thing. Their sources are not eco-freaks from Vermont or Berkeley, but scientists, financial insiders and retired oil executives, many of them bedrock conservatives. Their message: The era of oil is nearly at an end, and the social and economic consequences are barely imaginable."
The Austin Chronicle says: "If you're not worried about peak oil, you will be after watching Oil Crash, Basil Gelpke and Ray McCormack's meticulously researched look at the world's dwindling petroleum supply."

9. Energy Crossroads: A Burning Need to Change Course
(2007 - A Tiroir A Films Production - public viewing edition wi. extra material: Energy: Critical Choices Ahead - 1974; Extended Interviews; The Green Home with Steve Andrews; Cuba's Peak Oils)
"What made America great and powerful in the last century may well be the cause of its own demise in the 21st century if we don't change course today. This video is compelling and empowering. It is arguably one of the first to comprehensively cover the key aspects of the energy/environment/economy dilemma.
Energy Crossroads will satisfy "big picture" viewers who recognize the interdependence of the key inputs into our global energy and environmental "system'. It's a welcome update on End of Suburbia, the current benchmark for this genre of video.

10. Energy Star Home Sealing: Sealing Air Leaks and Adding Insulation
Featuring Steve Thomas EPA 430-C-06-001 April 2006 (12:40 min's)
A free DVD courtesy of the US government and available at www.energystar.gov

"EPA recommends sealing air leaks and adding insulation to make your home more comfortable, reduce energy bills, and help our environment. Save up to 20% in heating and cooling costs. Air leaks in your house can cause drafts and high energy bills." Doing the work can also reduce your carbon footprint (and CO2 emissions) by up to 20%.

An excellent introduction in the role of energy auditors in helping homeowners find energy-wasting air leaks in the envelope of their house. It also pinpoints common problems seen in existing homes, especially hose built in an era of low energy costs where the efficiency (air tightness) of the building was not a major concern. An invaluable aid to do-it-yourselfers who need to understand the dynamics of home energy sealing before starting the work.

11. ESCAPE FROM SUBURBIA:
Produced by Dara Rowland End of Suburbia Productions 2007 (95 min's)
The powerful sequel to the End of Suburbia, which explored the American way of life and its prospects in an energy-constrained world. In Escape, director Gregory Greene moves us from the realm of theory and despair to the real world, where practical solutions are experienced. 18. The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community: a David Korten presentation: prod. by Georgia Kelly/Praxis Peace Inst. in Sonoma, CA.
This is an excellent and fairly recent (May 2006) resource. Though limited by the "filming of a power-point presentation" format, Korten has a powerful thesis and his overview of where we're presently at and the choices at hand is important to understand.
David's inspiring and extensively illustrated presentation of the central message in his new book The Great Turning. David says we are at a defining moment in all of human history. Will future generations know ours as the time of the Great Unravelling, when profligate consumption exceeded Earth's capacity leading to a dramatic human dieback? Or will it be a time of the great turning, when the higher-order potential of human nature turned crisis into opportunity? Can we all learn to live in creative partnership with one another and Earth? May 2006 52 minutes, + Q & A 29 min

19. HOMELAND: Four Portraits of Native Action - from Katahdin Productions (winner of 29 awards) (89 min.)

"This is one of the most moving films I've seen in a long time. As captivating and beautifully filmed as any feature film, the message unfolds clearly and fairly, without the usual 'propaganda' tone, and somehow remains hopeful--a positive call to action... the way [the filmmakers] relayed the message as story telling, bringing the audience into the lives of real people--was brilliant, so much more effective than the usual documentary." Alexis Karolides, AIA, Principal, Green Development Services, Rocky Mountain Institute

Describes a more complete form of capitalism that can save human civilization at current population levels.

25. The Next Industrial Revolution: William McDonough, Michael Braungart and the Birth of the Sustainable Economy Narrated by Susan Sarandon
Better than the tip in The Graduate, this video has the tip for tomorrow: "BIOMIMICRY". Understanding this concept is a must for a solutions oriented approach that is uncompromising in describing an ancient model for sustainable living in nature, as a part of natural systems, without playing God as envisioned by mere humans. A very challenging prescription, and likely, the only one that will work.
"There are very few visionaries who are practical - Bill McDonough is one of the most profound environmental thinkers in the world." William Clay Ford Jr. Chairman, Ford M C. One of the best videos on Biomimicry (55' min.)

Richard Heinberg gives a compelling, chapter-by-chapter synopsis of Powerdown: Options and Actions for a Post Carbon World. "A visionary response to the coming energy famine, a clarion call to cooperative solutions." "A firm, humane assessment of the likely realities of life after fossil fuels.." The book is much better than the video.

29. THE POWER OF COMMUNITY: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil.
Community Service Inc. 2006 (53 min.)
"When Cuba lost acess to Soviet oil in the early 1990's, the country faced an immediate crisis -feeding the population- and an ongoing challenge: how to create a new low-energy society. Cuba transitioned from large, fossil fuel intensive farming to small, less energy-intensive organic farms and urban gardens, and from a highly industrial society to a more sustainable one.
This film tells the story of the Cuban peoples hardship, ingenuity and triumph over sudden adversity - through cooperation, conservation and community, told in their own words. As the world approaches Peak Oil, Cuba provides a valuable example of how to successfully address the challenge of reducing our energy use."
"Everyone who is concerned about Peak Oil needs to see this film. Cuba survived an energy famine during the 1990's, and how it did so constitutes one of the most important and hopeful stories of the past few decades. It is a story not just of individual achievement ut of the collective mobilization of an entire society to meet an enormous challenge." Richard Heinberg, author of The Party's Over.
The film has become a classic and is screened at many large conferences and seminars for the power of its example, the inventiveness and beauty of the spirit of the Cuban people.

30. Regional Localization Network Conference sponsored by WELL
Willits Economic LocaLization at Brooktrails Lodge, Willits, CA April 2006

33. The Story of Stuff: featuring Anne Leonard premiered at the IGF Triple Threat Teach-In at American University in Washington, DC as an 18 minute presentation on the connection between consumerism and environmental degradation.
Ann Leonard introduced the film by saying that it wasn't often that she would shut up and sit down for most of her presentation but would (and did) at this time. At the end of the video the entire audience, nearly a thousand of us, stood up and applauded.
It was released free of charge to the public on December 4th in a slightly longer version (20 minutes). A masterpiece of low-budget filmmaking by Annie and Free Range Studios, it is fast becoming the latest poster-child for viral marketing. The website, where you can watch and download the film, www.storyofstuff.com, had a half-million hits in the first two weeks after its release.
The Story of Stuff is a short but powerful film about the environmental and social impacts of our current production and consumption systems. The film intends to raise awareness about the often hidden impacts of production and consumption, to highlight the connections between a wide range of issues, and to spark discussion about both the systemic nature of the problem and effective strategies to address them.
The Story of Stuff is a fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns, with a special focus on the United States. It exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues and calls for all of us coming together to create a more sustainable and just world. It'll teach you something. It'll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever.
The ECLA PA has done five very successful presentations with the film in different settings. Merely describing the film is usually enough to gain a booking, and doubters have only to spend a few minutes watching it to offer approval. It has proved to be a valuable tool for introducing concepts of relocalization to varied groups. Sessions with the video are very productive and numerous questions arise that connect well with the answers offered by Relocalization.
Ralph Nader said "the film is a model of clarity and motivation". John Passacantando, Greenpeace's Executive Director, called it a "mega-hit on three levels". Kevin Hansen, of PierreTerre Productions, predicts that the film will win an Academy Award. I predict that there are many awards waiting for this little jewel of an educational documentary on the effects of the western lifestyle on this fragile planet. Free Range Studios Dec. 2007 (20 minutes)

34. Too Hot Not to Handle: An HBO Documentary Film
"Global Warming is the Most Urgent Threat Facing Humanity Today" While
peak oil is arguably a bigger threat to humanity, that, in combination
with global climate change, is becoming a massive and complicated
challenge to civilization. The two are related.
"Over the past 100 years, the mas consumption of fossil fuels,
especially in America, has contributed to a dangerous global warming
that is now beginning to adversely impact our lives - and promises to do
greater damage if we continue to ignore its warming signs. This
cautionary documentary offers a guide to the impacts of global warming
on the U.S. - and measures that can be taken to reverse this trend." In 11 chapters from heat waves and other weather extremes, to melting
in the polar regions, sea level rise, to energy efficient communities
and energy alternatives this well-made and positive documentary can
motivate people to change. Partnered with www.stopglobalwarming.org to
continue learning and action.

35. TRUDELL: (Appaloosa Pictures) Official Release Date May 15 '06
Filmmaker Heather Rae presents the engaging life story of Native American poet-prophet-activist John Trudell and his heartfelt message of active, personal responsibility to the earth, all of its inhabitants, and all our descendents. Cayuga actor Gary Farmer calls Trudell "our Socrates" - the truth teller not everyone is ready to hear." - Jason Silverman - Utne (80 min.)

36. We Are All Smith Islanders (an Award Winning CCAN Documentary)
If you think that global warming hasn't affected this area, think again. This well researched documentary on the Chesapeake Watershed shows the environmental refugees in the greater DC area, and the effects of global warming and sea level rise on the islands, shores, and inhabitants of the Chesapeake Bay region.

37. What a Way To Go: Life at the End of the Empire (2007?)
Visionquest Pictures Produced by Sally Erikson/ Written by TS Bennett (123 mn)

"A disturbing, compassionate, sometimes humorous personal essay about coming to grips with climate change, resource crises environmental meltdown, and the demise of the American lifestyle. Friends and experts analyze the historical, social, and psychological factors driving us toward human extinction. Bennett and Erickson challenge their audience to face difficult times with courage and integrity. With interviews of noted authors and scientists."

If you are easily depressed by dystopian forecasts and predictions you might want to pass on this tour-de-force of the possible consequences of the likely continued unbridled burning of fossil fuels. It opens with a man climbing out on a high window ledge and rarely lets up. Although it points to an eventual resolution that has survivors, it paints a somewhat bleak picture of life in an energy-constrained world.

It is a long video with a lot of talking heads pontificating and prognosticating on what will unfold as a complex global economic, social, and political reshuffling of a world torn between the "Blueprint" and "Scramble" models of coping. Might make a much easier presentation for viewers with an hour cut and left on the editing floor.
