Dear Madame Mayor and Bundaberg Region Councillors,

Since February, the Bundaberg World Environment Day Committee has been working very hard, planning and organising our celebration to take place this Sunday at the PCYC. In addition to the integral involvement of James Stanfield and his Waste & Recycling Services team with the "Mulch Madness" companion event this weekent and with Mr Stanfield as a speaker on Sunday, we were very pleasantly surprised yesterday to receive a phone call indicating that the council is providing a $500 cash sponsorship of our celebration! Please accept our thanks for your support of this very important event.

You will be pleased to know that the money is already earmarked for some important uses: A portion will be used to provide a barbeque lunch to the 50+ volunteers that are making the day possible - and the barbeque will consist almost entirely of local food and drink! In this respect, together we are directly supporting our local producers and reducing transport emissions, all at the same time. The remainder of the funds will go towards hire of the PCYC venue for the event. We appreciate council making this possible- thank you.

With the theme of this year's international World Environment Day event being "CO2: Kick The Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy" I was exceedingly pleased to read that the council is already working towards that goal. The council meeting minutes from April 15, 2008 indicate that the Bundaberg Region Council is participating in the Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Program Australia. The five CCP milestones, outlined below, have been undertaken by more than 800 local governments not only in Australia but also in Canada, Europe, Japan, Latin America, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the United States. SustainaBundy is glad to publicly commend you for taking part in this important program, and would like to offer whatever assistance we can in achieving these milestones in the Bundaberg Region.

The Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Campaign Milestones are:
1. Conduct a baseline emissions inventory and forecast.
2. Adopt an emissions reduction target for the forecast year.
3. Develop a Local Action Plan.
4. Implement policies and measures.
5. Monitor and verify results.

Again, we thank you for your participation in working for a sustainable Bundaberg. With all of us working together as a team, that goal will become a reality. I hope to have the opportunity to meet some of you on Sunday at the Bundaberg 2008 World Environment Day Celebration, and to personally say "thanks."

Best regards,

--
