Wildlife Preservation Society Queensland, Bundaberg Branch will be meeting in the Landcare Rooms at 80A Woongarra Street, (behind the library carpark) on Tuesday 4th December at 5.30.
Stop the Proposed Turtle Interpretation Centre in Bundaberg City.
Wildlife Preservation Society will have as guest speaker at their meeting Rod Pearce, who will be talking about his group's fight to stop turtles being allowed to be on display at the centre for so called "scientific research". This is an unatural and cruel way to treat young turtles who need to bond to their beach for future breeding. Please come and support Rod in this fight, as it seems to have most of council's support.
For more info about the group, and current projects please phone Ann on 41591931 or Sue on 4156168.

Bundaberg Turtle Interpretive Centre
It has not yet been determined by the members that we are intent on stopping the Turtle Interpretive Centre. After all, it has been proven that personal experience coupled with education are some of the most effective ways of gaining public support for action.
We do have grave concerns, however, with regards to the research project which proposes experimental research on 60 captive loggerhead turtle hatchlings each year for three years (plus a control group). That is up to 200 ENDANGERED loggerhead hatchlings. These hatchlings will be kept for up to a period of 2 years in Bundaberg, in an unnatural environment, which at the very least will destroy any chance of the imprinting to their natal beach.
I will post again after our meeting tonight, but impolore EVERYONE who has concerns about this proposal to contact Bundaberg City Council, review the development proposal (especially the research project details) and make your feelings known.

WPSQ meeting
I am not sure that our intent is to stop the Turtle Interpretive Centre. After all, it has been proven that public education and personal experience are some of the best ways to engender public commitment to action. We do, however, have very grave concerns about the centre's proposed research project which (according to the project outline) is based on the "conservation program" of headstarting. The outline goes on to explain that 60 loggerhead hatchlings per year for a three year period will be held in captivity (thus disrupting the essential "imprinting to their natal beach" which must occur). There are many many questions that need to be asked in regard to this project suggestion. Wildlife Bundaberg intends to ask.

news!
It was announced today that Burnett Shire Council will appeal against the Bundaberg City Council's proposal to build a Turtle Interpretive Centre in the CBD. While this does not mean that the research project will be halted, it does mean that final consideration of the entire proposal will now go before the new merged Council. New councillors from Isis and Kolan may not be so keen to spend this amount of money in this way. We will be trying to get as much information to these councillors prior to any discussion or vote occurring. WPSQ will continue to ask questions to ensure that sea turtle hatchlings grow, thrive and mature in their natural environment.

turtle update
Thanks for the update, Tracy. Do you know if the decision to appeal strictly a money issue, or whether they're also considering the environmental effect?
cheers,
