People may be wondering what on Earth they could possibly do about Climate Change - the problem just seems too big, too far gone, too hard.
Well, here is an interesting and hopefully thought-provoking statistic for you:
It has been estimated that if there was just a one percent increase in organic matter in the soil of the crop lands of the United States, 4.5 billion tonnes of CO2 would be transfered from the atmosphere back into the soil.
Now imagine what we could all do here in Australia in our own backyards, in school yards, community gardens, government owned lands like libraries, prisons, railway lines... the list goes on and on.
Adding organic matter to the soil (by composting, worm farming, using green manure crops, mulching and leaving the root systems of food crops in the soil after harvesting) will remove CO2 from the atmosphere and return it to the soil.
Just like a ban on fluoro-carbons (sp?) stopped the hole in ozone layer hole, we have a way to halt climate change.
I have also heard another statistic that if 10 percent of the world's farmers changed to organic farming methods, climate change could be halted...
Don't ever under estimate the power you have as an individual. If we all did our little bit, united we can make a big difference.

source for stat on adding organic content
Hello Sonya,
do you have a source for your stat on adding 1% to soil organics to sequester so much carbon? It's very hopeful, I'd like to use it, but need a source,
thanks

Stat
I got it from a sustainable agriculture course I did here in Queensland Australia last year with a group of scientists. They didn't print the source for it.

Soil carbon
To increase soil carbon and fertility you could have a look at Terra Preta (Amazon soil fertility) links on Google. There is also an world wide email list terrapreta@bioenergylists.org
This is the only *permanent* way that locks up carbon in the soil.
Planting trees overseas (or locally) is only a temporary step. Overseas planting has no guarantees that the trees will actually be planted and if planted they will *not* be put into use as timber or fuel.
