Educating the School Boards on Peak Oil

I have focused my time recently on making Powerpoint presentations to the Santa Clara USD Board of Education, the Santa Clara County Board of Education and County Supervisor Jim Beall on the subject of Peak Oil in conjunction with the need to hold onto local agricultural land that still remains in the Valley (aka Silicon Valley). I have combined my work with the "Friends of BAREC" who are working to save 17 acres of agricultural land located at 90 N. Winchester Blvd. from being turned into 11 acres of single family homes and 6 acres of elderly, low-income housing, which is the State's and City of Santa Clara's current plans.

A new perspective on Peak Oil

Sorry I've been absent from this site recently, school is totally kicking my ass right now. I'm lucky enough to be studying Activism and Social Change at the New College of California. The courses I'm currently taking have kept me from participating in PCI ventures as much as I would like, but they have provided me with valuable insights which I believe have added to my understanding of the political and social dimensions of peak oil. I'm using these points as a basis for any new discussions I have about Peak Oil and Gas, starting tonight at Acterra in Palo Alto (EOS screening).

When I first came to learn about the Hubbert Peak, I admit I was very much swept into the apocolyptic mentality that is everpresent within the Peaknik community. I'd like to think that my viewpoint has matured quite a bit since then. Here are some thoughts I've had that I think are useful in the outset of any peak oil discussion.

Meeting my city councilman and ReLoc2006!

I met with Councilman Yeager last week, and introduced him to the Relocalization Platform. We also discussed several of the "big issues" facing San Jose's government, as framed (primarily) by the Mercury News, our local daily. He is, in my judgement, a good person, and a dedicated public servant. I hope he wins election to the County Board of Supervisors, as one of his rivals has made a 180 flip on land use and development issues since being elected to public office -- thanks to Linda for that tip. Yeager has a record of working with the Greenbelt Alliance, a conservation group, and other groups advocating for affordable housing.
